My volunteer memory involves me sleeping too little, losing my phone, and still having an awesome time with some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. The first day of my volunteer shift, I had been up real late the night before hanging out listening to music, jus Scamping ;), and basically got 2 hours of sleep before the shift. So as I sleep walked over to my shift, I realized somewhere along the way I had lost my phone! I retraced my steps but eventually had no time and had to make it on my shift on time, giving up on my phone. While this was a bummer, I was immediately greeted by a group of nice loving people, and within a few hours completely forgot or cared that I had a phone before. That shift was fairly ordinary, but that night I met a young man outside I believe Wick-it the instigator’s late night set. He let me know that the cheese fries I were eating smelled good, and so I offered to share with him and his girlfriend. We got to chatting, and I told him I was working with the green team department of volunteering. He let me know that his sister ran the entire green team program and I should let her know that the two of us meet ! I of course did, and while I cannot say if it had anything to do with it, my volunteer shift for that next day was backstage mainstage. I got to enjoy future rock’s set, greensky bluegrass’s set, and even meet Mike from Lotus ! Which during this it was very difficult to not go entirely fanboy and try and play it cool, “i’ll probably be at your set later!” obviously I would. Overall though the volunteering experience was a great way for me to just become more entwined in a scene that has become so important to me, meet so many great people, and what was also really awesome was how thankful people are. So many festival goers were incredibly polite and awesome. Also UMPH LOVE lets do it better this year. Thanks for the opportunity.
